Joop: What did you decide on a shifter for the O/D? Curious minds want to know.
Thanks,

Will install the cable first.

Have made a bracket (right) from a late 1931 steering column bracket.

On the left is the Mittchel bracket for the V8

If it does not work out can always install the shifter

Will keep you all updated.

I finished the installation of the Mitchell today.

Took it out for a spin and it works great with the cable shifter.

The reason I put in the cable is simple, if you put in the floor shifter and fold the passenger seat forward to let passengers in it will hit the shifter lever.

The floor shifter works well on cars with a front bench.

And I like to keep my floor mat and floorboard original

With this setup you do not have to drill holes.

Some more pictures on how it looks underneath.

I did paint the unit and cables black so no shiny box.

Is the cable shifter available to retro fit from a shift lever?

I have over 85,000 miles on my Mitchell (behind a 39 tranny) and have used the neutral twice FOR TOWING. It saves the rear tranny bearing from overheating. I would not want to travel far without my Mitchell !!

Interesting. I like idea of keeping the floor mat and floorboard original but what's it like using this system rather than a floor shifter? Isn't it more cumbersome?

I have the Mitchell Overdrive with floor shifter and it is fantastic.
The cable shifter is less of an eyesore, but the floor shifter is better for me, since I use it all the time.
I take full advantage of the split gearing capability.
I also shift the Mitchell into Neutral quite often; it allows me to down shift without grinding. When going from 3rd to 2nd, I put the Mitchell in Neutral and then downshift to 2nd and put the Mitchell back into low gear.
I also like to switch into overdrive from 2nd gear when climbing a hill and 3rd gear would be too much lugging on the engine for that particular hill and speed; so this gives me what I call gear 2.5, between 2nd and 3rd gear.

I guess it's fair say that if you will be using the Mitchell often it's best to have a floor shifter rather than a more cumbersome cable shifter...correct?

Does the Mitchell floor shifter cut much into front passenger legroom?

Chris, this also keeps the pressure off the rear thrust and prolongs it's life.

Brattons has the Mitchell overdrive @ $2275.

I do not know the price from Mitchell.

You can shift on the "FLY". Six forward and two reverse gears. All new parts including drive shaft, torque tube and speedo gear assembly. Precision 30 degree helical gears for ease of operation. This is a 26% ratio. Floor mounted gear shift. Completely assembled. Used with round speedometer.

I use a cable to engage the freewheeling in my Borg Warner unit....and a switch for the overdrive function....works fine.... made a aluminum pannel that clamps around the steering shaft...and looks neat.
