There are NO serial numbers on 59ABs from the factory.

The serial numbers (current VIN) were stamped on the top of the transmission case where it meets the engine block just above the inspection plate there. Since transmission and engines were completed as an assembly prior to installation or shipment to other assembly lines, FoMoCo stamped that location only. When each engine/tranmission assembly was mated to the frame, the numbers were then stamped on the frame as well. This practice came to a close with the 1949 cars (1948 commercials with 8BA engines).

Some states required engine numbers to be stamped on the engines but this was probably performed by dealers at delivery of the new automobiles. FoMoCo stamped date codes on some engines on the intake deck but not all.

Back in the old days,if you had a bad engine, the engine was generally just replaced as Ford had a series of authorized rebuilders to do the engine rebuild. A dealer had engines on the shelf ready for replacement. The transmission stayed with the car, hence no serial number on the engine.
