Default copper head gasket

I am replacing the head gasket, I have a new copper gasket, which side is up? the flat side or the side with seams? I do not remember, the last few years I have been using the new style that is presealed and says this side up. A mind is a sad thing to lose, Thanks, Bob

many prefer the seam against the head, the theory being if the seams wear into the surface, its easier to surface the head than deck the block.

The seam side should go up, unless the gasket is marked otherwise. Sometimes the seam can leave a wear mark in the head and it's easier to plane the head than the block.
