32 rear spare tire cover challenge
I've placed the B-1395-A black tire cover on the tire face and wrapped
the tire tread with the chrome cover. It has a small hole at each end. Is there a spring or something that holds the tire cover tight? All the pictures I have seen are obscured by the bumper. Is it correct to have both the locking hub cap and band type wheel lock? Last year I purchase a 32 V8 engine with a transmission. I could tell the trans was an early one. It did not have the raised boss for the vin #. After cleaning all the dirt off it was confirmed 18-439 . Would this place it in March of 32. Thanks inquiring minds want to know |

The engine is not the early flange block. But yes, I will take and post a picture
of the trans. |

For the '32s, locking spare wheel hubcaps were a late addition. The locking band accessory was available early in the model year and became more or less obsolete with the availability of the locking hub cap as it attached to the rear spare tire carrier and not to the hub cap. A separate band that attached to the locking hub cap was released at the time of the release of the locking hub cap. Theoretically, it prevented the theft of the tire while the locking hub cap prevented the theft of the wheel. The survival rate of the later band that attached to the cap is extremely low, which perhaps is not surprising given how long it would take a thief to steal an inflated tire off a wheel mounted on the back of a car. If original, the oil pan on 18-439, along with the steady rod brackets on the sides of the engine block bell housing and the timing gear cover would be very rare survivors |
