29 right fender different from left?
Having finished the left rear fender from my 29 tudor, today I tore into the right fender. I noticed that the right fender was different from the left. On the left fender the flange that bolts to the car is a uniform 1.5 inches wide. On the right fender it is only about 1.25 inches with extra sheet metal added near the bolt hole (see first picture). I went on eBay and found a 1929 NOS fender for sale that had the same feature (see second picture)!
So what's the story? Did Ford manufacture left and right fenders with slightly different designs? Strange? |

First you need to understand that 'most' NOS fenders we see today were NOT manufactured by Ford!

Re: 29 right fender different from left?
While not answering the question you have given me an idea. I am guessing that one explanation is that both the eBay "NOS" fender and my right fender are actually a NORS replacements which would explain its difference?

In a left handed manner he made you answer your own question.

Re: 29 right fender different from left?
I have thought for a long time that at least the 1930 fronts were different left and right. Take a look at some cars from the front and see if you don't think that front curve is different.

We are looking at cars we have not owned since new. As such we do not know what has been changed.

Actually New Old Replacement Stock. Contemporary parts that were produced for the millions of model A Fords needing repairs during its production, but not by Ford.

I have wondered where/when the acronyms of NOS and NORS actually originated. Henry's name for NORS back in the day was Gyp parts. Kinda like the modern term of Repro ....which I can remember called 'repo' back in the '60s & '70s. |

Re: 29 right fender different from left?
I have seen fenders with the Ford part number painted on with a production date of 1936. As I understand Ford sent the tooling to South America and continued to have parts manufactured there for several years after production of the Model A ended. This could be where your fender came from.

Re: 29 right fender different from left?
There is a high-end restorer that showed me a NOS Ford made front fender which was misformed. It looked like it slipped in one of the dies. He reworked it to how it should have been. I have heard that rejects were not scrapped but slated for dealer service. I suppose the owner was happy to get his wrecked car back usable though it wasn't quite the same as when he bought it.
