Fordomatic converters question
Would someone explain the different air cooled fordomatic converters? I see information on one using different flexplates than the original fingered plate but i have found i have a converter that will not take the replacement flexplate. I can account for two different width ring gears that changes the bolt hole distance to bolt the flexplate to the converter. I have extra flexplates that wont fit my 14 3/4 wide ring plate on my converter. However, i have plates that fit a 15 inch wide converter ring gear plate.
The oval id tag is destroyed to id my tranny. The bell housing and engine(272) came from 56 ford. This is a small case cast tranny. So unless there is a different flexplate, i need a plate to fit my converter. I need plate with 13 inch bolt hole center to bolt hole center. Is one available? ken At gt. rr. com To contact me direct. Im still leaning this site. |

Re: Fordomatic converters question
Yes. And i have the heavy round disc plate. Both will not mate up to my converter. The mounting holes for plate to converter are different distances apart. Maybe the converter is different for small case and medium case fordomatics. Does anyone know? The square plate you have posted is most likely for a water cooled tranny. The converter is different.

Re: Fordomatic converters question
The TRANS ID PLATE has been defaced or just had the paint removed? If still there, can you see any stamping characters.
Is there any possibility the trans is out of a 1954 239CI? Major design changes in 1955. The small case and mid case takes (1955/ ) the same setup (flex-plate - stator cover) whether air or water cooled.. |
