Routing parking brake front cable
I have found that my 1956 Thunderbird was missing the parking brake front cable that goes from the parking brake handle to the yoke under the car. I'm trying to install a new parking brake cable, but have some questions.
From looking at the mechanism on the firewall with the pulley, it looks to me like the cable would go over that pulley and down through the floor board or firewall somewhere. I could not find a hole to route the cable from under the car, nor inside the car near the pulley. Can anyone tell me where the hole might be, or where I should drill a hole if needed? thanks, |

There has got to be a hole somewhere. Got the new cable? Try to match up where it could come out. On my Ford, it was at the left side, top of the toe kick.

Re: Routing parking brake front cable
The hole is under the cover that holds the headlight dimmer switch.
And yes, there should be a grommet in the hole. Last edited by dmsfrr; 04-20-2016 at 08:34 PM. |

Re: Routing parking brake front cable
Thanks so much for the picture, that really helps to know where to start digging. I thought it must be in that general area, based on the pulley. What threw me off was I couldn't see anything under the car. Now I have hope I might be able to get it installed.
Thanks again |

Re: Routing parking brake front cable
Thanks again for the pictures to lead me to where the cable goes. Even with that knowledge, it was a bear to get it where it needed to go. It came up about 1/2 inch short so I secured it on the floor board in a place I don't think it was meant for so I could secure it to the frame under the car. Now I'm not sure it's going to reach the lever attached to the yolk. I'm not too worried about that as I think I can extend the bolt on the end.
My question today is there a trick to removing the pin that keeps the handle from pulling completely out of the track? Is it just pressed in or threaded? I can't seem to pullbit out. I need to pull the handle out as I discovered part of the old cable is still attached to the end of the handle. Thanks |
