Re: Insulated carb spacers
Phil,
They are easy enough to make. Use a piece of 1" thick medium density hard board. 2 big holes, 3 little ones and profile to match a carb base. You should be able to do that in about a 1/2 hour. Chuck |

Re: Insulated carb spacers
Chuck,Even though I own a machine shop, till I buy the phenolic, and break into a Bridgport ,sometimes it is more cost effective to buy the item.Though I am thinking to equipt all my V8S that would be 5 spacers. It would most likly pay to make them myself. How thick should they be? Phil

Re: Insulated carb spacers
1" to 1 1/2" Medium Density Hardboard (MDH) or a dense wood like Butch used would be more than adequate. You should be able to get a scrap piece cheap at one of the big box lumber stores. Ah, the luxury of a Bridgeport, I wish I had one. A drill press and a table saw will work for this. The clearcoat is also a good idea. It will seal any vacuum leaks through the material and help keep it cleaner.

Re: Insulated carb spacers
Bob Shewman [email protected] makes the best one. His is a 1/2" thick and has venting holes for better cooling. It comes with gaskets and longer studs. You can also call him at 1-610-933-6637 G.M.

There is a place named CoolCarb Technologies that makes thin insulators. www.coolcarb.com

Re: Insulated carb spacers
Phil,
I made some out of Corian, the stuff counter tops are made of. They were 3/4" worked good at keeping the heat off the carb. Chuck S. |

Re: Insulated carb spacers
When you install them, use fiber washers under the carb nuts. Otherwise the studs will conduct the heat into the carb base and defeat much of the insulating the spacer does.

Unless you have tested all possible carburetor insulators, that is an opinion at best.

Re: Insulated carb spacers
I have Dick Spadaro's on mine. It seems to help with the boiling. However, until she reaches normal temp. I get an intermittent "plup, plup plup out of the exhaust with 21 inches of steady vacuum. The cast carb base is ice cold with cold beads of condensation on it. It will run fine when warmed to normal but then she'll start her plup plupping, very pulsating idle and stall then she'll run fine again. Drives me nuts! Sure wish I could get rid of the plate and get back to my smooth running flattie.
