Default Ticking sound while engine is operating

This is an intermittent condition. While running at speed the engine acquires a rapid ticking sound that I cannot isolate. Is it a worn timing gear and cam shaft action? It is not a wrist pin, ignition-timing or bearing knock type of noise. Thoughts? Is there a quick way to isolate a timing gear issue? Is it difficult to replace the timing gear? Thanks in advance for the comments. TQ

Can you verify location with a mechanic's stethoscope ? Excessive wear on the timing gears are usually constant under load. Not too difficult a task replacing the cam gear - upon replacement of the gear cover, an alignment tool should be used to center the camshaft to the housing for concentricity of the roller or gears if you're running a distributor.
