Alright have a problem with a 31 special delivery. The back right tire locked up at slow speed with no brake on. Did that in reverse as well. I was able to limp home. I drained the differential and use magnet and found nothing. The wheels will spin each other on jack stands under axle in gear but the gear in differential does not turn. I dread a rebuild cause it doesnt look cheap. I will try to investigate brakes as well.

It is very possible that the emergency brake locked up. Loosen the adjusting bolt, remove the drum and inspect.
Do you have the red book as a guide? |

Okay pulled hubs. Right side all the wheel stubs came undone. Guess they didn't use impacts back then. anyways nothing loose. There is alot of play like 1/8" or more in the axle. if the E-brake locked up why would it make a loud bang?

The right side hub had score marks where the wheel studs are. Maybe something in the brakes was rubbing on it and there where some metal fillings down by the E brake spring.
Do axles normally have that much play? |

Do you think the wheel studs could come loose and caused the bang?

Check the brake backing plates One of them could have cracked and got bent. This would move the shoe assembly and cause a lockup. It happenen to me once when touring. Apparently there was a backing plate design that could cause this to happen. When the lockup occurs it gives the impression something in rear end failed.
I replaced the backing plate with a different design and the problem was solved. |

I will check the backing plate as well. The wheel stud definately came loose or someone previously tried to change the tire and the wheel stud spun out but it took a chunk out of one of the brake components. I have a picture but dont have an online image host.
I'm just gonna weld em in then grind em down. Looks like someone had already done that to one and I had to weld the other one to get the lugnut off. |

I had this happen to my 29 CCPU. I would go and then feel it bind up and then bang. The bind-up and still rolling was what had us confused. After a lot of diagnosing transmission, driveline and u-joints, it was the rear end. I also put in the higher-speed ring and pinion while we were in there. Good luck with what you find.
