Default 54 Mercury 256 engine question

I need to know what this assembly is on the drivers side of the lower engine below the oil filter. I thin it is leaking oil

That's the oil pump. Can you tell if the pump itself is leaking, or is the leak from where the pump body meets the block?

It's the oil pump. Could be the bushing that connects the oil pickup tube into the pump may have a worn out gasket. Also check pump-to-block gasket.
I would check mounting bolt torque recommendations for it in the shop manual and see if the bolts are tight. DOP NOT overtighten these as the bolts can bust the threads out of the block.
If threads are already busted out, you can oversize drill for the next size up threaded bushing. After drilling, tap the hole for the threads to match the bushing and screw it into the block. Then you can use your original bolt or a new replacement of same length.

Thank you gentlemen. Took me awhile looking through the manual for a picture.
Does it need to be rebuilt?? Or just gaskets/loose bolts as mentioned??
Can the assembly be remove from the block without much trouble and cleaned and checked??

can't tell from the pics but if it's leaking from the end plate w/ the 4 bolts, a new O-ring may help. our '60 had a leak there and found a new O ring and that solved our leak.
