Default 49 3-speed question

What's the trick to reinstall the speedometer drive gear in a 49 3-speed transmission. It feels like the drive gear just falls into the transmission. How do you get it to mesh with the inside gear?

The speedo driven gear will have a small pilot stub on the bottom end......this fits into a corresponding pocket down inside the rear mount casting. Lube the gear teeth and the pilot with grease and just drop it down the opening. Make sure that the pilot stub fits into the pocket. When you install the retaining bushing over the top of the gear, it’ll align the gear with the speedo drive gear on the mainshaft. With the bushing tightened up, you’re ready to attach your speedo cable.
