WOW, one needs to know alot more than meets the eye..I need alot more help here. 1st of all does anyone know of an active charter club of THE MODEL A FORD CLUB in New Jersey??? And now back to the real question , the rear spring spreader tool, I did some reading on this , home made ones and store bought spreaders , while the home made tool looks strong is the ones offered buy the supply houses just as strong and just as good?? I need to remove my rear spring , I dont mind buying one but which one to buy? Any body ever use any of these bought from Brattons or mikes or any other place?? I want it to be strong because i wanna be safe . Any suggestions out there . thanks again THE HOOCH

working on the rear spring can be dangerous, buy the good one, most all parts houses sell them . i still wrap a safety chain around the spring before taking out the center bolt.

This is a nice one. I have it and have used it a couple times. Worked well. see link
http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/4646 Synders have other versions that are a little cheaper. Probably would work great. Looks like the same spreader as brattons offers. The way I look at it. Rear Spring Spreader: $134 Used it 3 times: $44.66 (a use, so far) Having the right tool when I need it to safely do the job: priceless. Although if I knew someone local that had one I could borrow, I do that! :] Last edited by Tinker; 09-04-2012 at 03:31 PM. |

Removing the spring is one thing and taking it apart[separating the leaves] is another.. You can use the spreader to remove the spring.. If you want to take the spring apart,, use a c-clamp while you loosen the center bolt..

Removing a rear spring with a broken center bolt can be quite exciting. Twice I have been able to replace a center bolt from inside the car before loosening the U bolts, then spreading the spring.

I actually bought one from him and I have used it a number of times. It is really a nice tool. It was like $60.00 when I bought it but he has raised his pricing along with demand. I think he wants somewhere around $130.00 now. Still a good and safe tool.

I have both the front and rear spreaders. Haven't used the rear one yet, but very well made, good value -- safe tool.
