Steering Column Spacer
A steering column spacer lowers the column in the 180A, the 190A and 400A. Was the spacer used in any other Model A's? Was there only one length of spacer made?

Re: Steering Column Spacer
You want to lower yours (maybe you have a Tudor) I want to raise mine (a much more difficult project) I have an 28 RPU and i know from experience with other cars that raising it will give me a bit more room. Something for everybody!

Bob
It was only used on about the first hundred 400A’s that had a flat firewall. Joop |

Re: Steering Column Spacer
There were several lengths of the column drop not made into the gas tank.
Most of the body styles with the later bucket seat has the longest drop. The original Vic I had (sold to the late David Moore and featured on Vince Falter Ford Garage) had late drivers seat, long drop, no spacer. The earlier bucket seats on drivers side were not raised as high as the later one with the slide assembly. The only ones with the same size, lower seats were the early Vic and the 180a. Begs the question, what did early Vics have for a drop? Or, we’re all early Vics non-indented firewalls. Could be. That would leave the spacer to 180a…imho. |

Re: Steering Column Spacer
My pleasure…..that was a looooong time ago! Still at it but age certainly has slowed and limited me….
Raising the column certainly has some limits! Might look at modifying the seat risers in the floor? Is drivers side the wider seat with angled floor mounts? Most steel backs are that such.of course the spacer removal would be a great start. You might consider a shorter rail mount and take the pressure off the tank bracket (offer leak there). The short ones are pretty common; long ones a bit more rare. |

Re: Steering Column Spacer
Following up with a question - does anyone have a spacer they would like to sell,
or possibly send me pictures with measurements so that I could duplicate in on my Bridgeport? My mount is on the bottom of the tank and I would like to drop the column somewhat, and don't have access to a Vic independent column mount. Thanks, Steve |

Re: Steering Column Spacer
Bert's has a reproduction spacer in their catalog, and they may have an original.
