starter service
i grew up around electric motors so starter/generator diagnosis is not too much of a problem, i even have a growler for checking armatures. i remember the motor shops having a ,motorized saw like device that was used to undercut the mica on the commutator after cleaning it up. that i don't have. does any body have suggestions on an easy way to do this short of using a hacksaw blade and doing a not too good of a job by hand?

Re: starter service
If you have a lathe, you could chuck up the armature and modify a cutting tool to do the job.

Re: starter service
after i did the post,, i used a dremel with one of the thin abrasive cut off discs. not very precision like the cutters i used to see, but got a decent job anyway. i just rolled it around on the work bench as i undercut the mica. might have been a bit smoother in the lathe.

Re: starter service
YOU DO NOT UNDER CUT THE MICA ON A STARTER. Only the generator is under cut.

Re: starter service
The undercut only needs to be about .010" on the generator. I use an ATLAS hobby saw that most train stores or hobby shops sell. It has a thin fine tooth blade and does a great job of undercutting. After the undercut, I give the commutator a fine polish with crocus cloth while spinning the armature in both directions in my lathe.
