Thanks Pete, It's been kinda like an easter egg hunt going through all the boxes and shelves to come up with what I need. By and large I have been quite surprised I found as many of the parts specific to this engine build as I did. When one of you guys suggested I should try to find a model 94 carb with the 1 1/16" bores, it was the second carb I looked at and it is just like brand new. And here some of my family just thought I was hoarding old junk......

Its almost like an orgasam when you finally get to use a part you have stored, moved around, looked at for decades...then BINGO its just what you need.

Exactly! I worked with Ed Isky to make two roller-cams for flatheads - back when I was in my early 20's. Then (due to not having roller lifters and no time to make them), I drug those cams around for the next almost 40 years. Then I finally got to put one of the cams in my 32 Cabriolet. I was like a kid at Christmas!

Last week a friend stopped by to see this project of mine and he asked me when I thought I'd be firing it up for the first time. He suggested that a first start up of something like this is the 'second best feeling in the world'. And here I thought that was when you finally get the tweezers on that two week old splinter and it comes out in one piece. Sure hope those marsden nuts come for the con rods today. I'd love to start buttoning things up. Should I fill the oil pump up with something like stp?

I've always heard to pack the pump with Vaseline. It is very viscous and dissolves easily.

What Denny says...vaseline is great for the pump priming.

One of my old instructors called vaseline "bedroom salve". You put it on the door knob to keep the kids out.

I always wondered why they called it that....
Snuck into town this afternoon in the ragged ol tonner. That 226 runs real nice and is smooth and quiet. The T-9 crunch-box makes more noise than the engine. Napa no longer lists a mechanical fuel pump for our V8s, but I did get a pair of 180 degree thermostats and a can of permatex aerosol copper coat for my head gaskets. No rod nuts in the mail yet, but I've been cleaning and priming engine parts in between cabinet work when I get tired of sucking in sawdust.

You may want to put the nice looking carburetor on another flathead V8 in your fleet and test run it first. You don't want the first running of your new engine to be an exercise in trouble shooting a carburetor.

That's a good plan. The woodie has a great carb on it right now and I always have them removed when hoisting an engine, so there will be two carbs just sitting there.Oh wait I just thought about the vacuum port to the load a matic distributor. The 1 1/16 bore carb I found last week is spotless inside like a surgical device. Before uncovering it in a box, I had bought a Daytona carb kit for that type carb. I don't have a known good carb 8ba style carb. I have rebuilt a lot of these so am confident I can do a good job of it. I don't like the flap type of 'needle/seat' that the Daytona uses so I use the stock type. If my pre-49 carb on the woodie will be better for the start I could try that first. As 'Christmassy'as the first run can be, it can also be very stressful. I don't know the load a matic system well enough to decide that. I do know I have had 2 8ba trucks with the stock system and found them both to be very good runners and easy starters. I also know the hot rodders are not fans. I think I'll go down and get a couple pics of this 'big bore 94'.

Absolutely as discovered. I know nothing whatsoever about where or when I got this. Most likely it came with the boxes of parts associated with my large block purchase. I would say from the looks of it that it's an unused rebuilt by autolite. I intend to put kit in it before using it.

I have a 255 cu in motor and it runs fine with a stock 94 8BA carb. I do note you said you don't have one of those. If you look closely at the base of the 1-1/16" carb you will note the bores are bigger and are spaced wider. The gasket is different to suit. The point I am coming to is that your manifold is probably not matched to that size and spacing. I don't know if that is a problem or not.
Does anyone have first hand experience of using the 1-1/16" carb in an otherwise stock application?
