when the E brake is used too often to stop a moving car, the carrier is damaged due to taking the force of the band against the stops, which bends the carrier, eventually curling the stops back like a sardine can. Yours could have suffered from this. Its probably not round. The stop, where the ends of the band rest, is probably now a high spot.
