I don't know that the '37 coupes or convertibles were ever considered " ugly ducklings" back in the day.
The '37 frontal styling was influenced by the Lincoln Zephyrs and was ( is ) quite pleasing to the eye.
The problem lay with the sedans, especially the flatbacks which seemed a little stubby.
I think Bob Gregorie and Edsel Ford would have preferred to lengthen the sedan bodies a little ( or even the rear fenders like they did with the '38 standard sedans ) to at least give the impression of a longer car. However Henry had the final say.
