On the "make sure the spark lever is retarded" statement. Let me add that if you have a good friend (like mine) near by. Be very leary of them
advancing the spark just as you go into spinning the crank! It is one of
the "funny" pranks we like to pull on each other with his Model-T's.

Back when I was in high school I had an original '29 Chevy. Once when
the starter Bendix spring broke I had to do a lot of hand cranking. It
was especially annoying if I stalled the car at a red light. I would jump out of the car grabbing the crank handle as I went. Run to the front, stick in the handle and most of the time I was lucky. She would fire up
before I was through the first spin cycle. Nobody ever got mad and started honking their horn. I guess they enjoyed the show and times
were easier on the road back in the mid 60's.
