I had the same problem with my '51. Checked and cleaned grounds and connections to no avail. Then I realized I had a group 1 battery in it (I needed a new battery the year before in a pinch, and it was all that was available). Group 1 batteries are quite a bit smaller than what originally came in Fords and are used in tractors, etc. I replaced it with an Optima and all the problems disappeared. The proper battery that's not 100% could have the same problem.
