The TRANS ID PLATE has been defaced or just had the paint removed? If still there, can you see any stamping characters.

Is there any possibility the trans is out of a 1954 239CI? Major design changes in 1955.

The small case and mid case takes (1955/ ) the same setup (flex-plate - stator cover) whether air or water cooled..
