I put a solid-state vibe unit in my '50, replaced a couple burnt up resistors and a few caps. Found the schematic online. Works fantastic now!

Ok, I have to ask, what is a "cap" and where did you get the solid-state vibe unit?
I still love going under power lines and hearing the static. When I was kid I hated, now it take be back. We are lucky here in Denver, as he have at least 2 good AM stations and one on them is a 50's station.
Got the tester a few years back for $10.00 and it came with the manual with the listing of all of the tubes. Works great.
