Are not the late '40's early '50's Fords still considered the toughest cars ever made?

I recall that they are much sought after for grueling races (Peking to Paris on one set of tires) and the Mexican road races.

Seems they have the most overbuilt frames, strongest metallurgy, and simplicity of design.
