The theory of applying a very hard, slick, surface to the crank journals is a good one. And, the chroming process offers the added advantage of being able to increase journal diameter so a mildly worn journal can be restored to original size. However, the strength of a steel crank is sacraficed when dunked in the chroming tank for several hours. I, personally, have never chromed a stock Flathead nodular crank and have not explored the possibility. But I have had some Boss 302 forged steel cranks done and know that one of them broke.
