You won't burn out the coils, but here is an easy way to tell..

Hook 12v power to 1 side of the coil, and then check the voltage on the other side.. H

(hook to + and check output on - for instance, the polarity for the test is not important and won't hurt either way)

12v through a 12v coil will still show 12v when it comes out the other post of the coil, however a 6v coil will drop the voltage to 6v.. I have used old 6v coils as voltage reducers before for intermittent items in a 12 v system, like a horn or other item
