The March 1929 Service Bulletins page 327 shows the new muffler clamp. It also says when replacing the old style clamp with the new clamp, you are to move the mounting hole rearward 1 11/32". I'm wondering if this is just to retain more frame strength by having the holes further apart?
Since you want to clamp the top of the curve, you can't move the hole far in either direction.
If the body isn't on the frame then the exhaust would raise up and probably hit the axle. The same goes if the spring is too thick.
I just took this picture of my 28 exhaust, and I'm glad I did. I just noticed the light color next to the rim, and if that's tire cords, it's time for new tires.
