I'm pretty sure side view mirrors were an option back then on most cars.
My Father bought a new '63 Dodge, and had to order the side view mirror for the driver's side. Not standard. I also have a 1955 Ranch Wagon (base Mainline version) with the original paint, and there is no mirror on either side and no holes or eveidence in the paint that there were ever any.
