Default Grease fitting on exhaust pipe

Back in the mid 60's I was a teenager that read a lot of Hot Rod magazines instead of studying at school. I remember reading about someone recommending in one of the magazines to drill and tap a hole in the exhaust pipe up close to the manifold for a grease fitting and to shoot about 4 shots of grease in it every time the car was serviced. The purpose was to coat the inside of the exhaust system to keep it from rusting out internally. It said that when the car warmed up the grease melted and coated everything in side the system. I have never tried this but have always intended to. Has anyone else ever heard this or tried it to see if it really works.
