Bruce: When I did my 41 pickup, I TIG Tack welded them. With caution, you can avoid melting the rubber. If I had to do it again, I would probably crimp them as you thought or swage them with a chisel. Another barn member recommended JB Weld. You could also buy the specific tool to do the crimp, but that might be a bit pricey.
