They run off pressure so the pumps have to give good flow and the pressure regulator has to work. The selector is connected with a valve that sounds like it was functioning normally at least when the car actually had band actuators and clutch pistons working. My guess it that it has an internal leak somewhere that's causing a loss in pressure. There are a number of tubes in there than can leak. The oil screen may be gunked up too.

Do you know what type of fluid it in the transmission? I ask this because the fluid that was used in 1955 is no longer available today. What ever is put in it in the future should be the same as what has been in it all these years.
