For mice I use plastic containers (Tupperware) with holes on the lid and cotton inside cover with water, to which I pour a nice amount of peppermint oil. Place 2 per car inside and 2 underneath. I Leave the cars (2) in that way the full winter inside the barn. No mice nests at all and they always smell as peppermint in spring.
To solve your actual problem I will just spray peppermint oil on the upholstery. It is strong so just several drops or a spoon size of oil will be enought.
