To answer, my car does not have a cowl mounted gas tank and I have no idea how to get a look up inside from underneath. Dumb me. I tried my local ACE Hardware, came up empty. I am actually thinking about the 6x1M screws and see if they work. When I probe the screw holes there does seem to be some sort of impedance about 3/4" down in the hole and something can be moved around. I had trouble getting one of the 10-32 screws that were on the car when I bought it in the hole until I probed it and moved something. Maybe that something is a 12-24 nut, I hope I hope I hope.
