Does the car have an ID plate attached anywhere? Likely an assigned number but if so you'd think the owner would've stamped an ID plate or put the number somewhere on the car. The engine number was originally the same as the car VIN, but when engines are changed out most people don't restamp them to match the VIN. Look elsewhere on the car. The original VIN is on the frame, but have to lift the body to see it. If all checks out OK, and the VIN is verified, I'd make sure the car has it stamped permanently.
