Another advantage of Mobil 1 is that it is a designer chemical. Conventional lube oil is for the most part whatever was in the crude. You make lube oil by taking out what isn't lube. The purity of Mobil 1 is why it is so good at -40F. With conventional lube oils it is difficult to get all the waxes out that cause oil to gel at low temperatures.
