Re: Help needed to identify Bell Housing

The Borg-Warner T9 transmission was used in lots more applications than just Ford trucks. I have seen reference to them in many other old trucks, in various tractors, and in industrial engine...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I omitted the lock washers on Dad's 8BA. I checked thread depth by running each bolt into its mating hole and comparing to cap height, all tapped holes in that block were more than deep enough. I...

Re: My next flathead build?

Your block is interesting. All the normal casting features indicate it is a 39-40 "99" block type (239 cubic inch engine):

Round center water hole
Upside down trapezoid lower water hole

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I have seen an 8BA cast iron distributor adapted for Model T use with every other lobe on the points cam ground off and a manual advance lever made up that attaches to the vacuum diaphragm opening....

Re: My next flathead build?

That is a interesting combination of parts. In the USA the core plugs in the oil pan rail were phased out in late 1940 with the switch to the "raised deck" blocks for 41 model year. The combination...

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend

The 36 Zephyrs used 4.33 ratio with a Ford type banjo. That apparently wasn't a deep enough rear gear for the low torque V12 and heavier car, so 4.44 and 4.55 ratios were used. The hypoid type banjo...

Re: Trip to the nationals in the 34

Good to hear the meet was a success, and fun pictures of your travels. Thanks for the update.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

That is the type of truck water pump you need. I may have a decent looking used mate for it, but need to check; it will probably be a couple weeks before I can look. Shipping would be from Texas at...

Re: My next flathead build?

That looks crusty and gunky, but so far nothing looks catastrophic. I would check the oil pan rail for freeze cracks before getting too excited, but I'm cautiously optimistic for you.

The head...

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend

Not that close, but parts could be shipped.
If you have the factory controls I am very interested in them since I will be putting a Columbia under my brother's 36 Zephyr at some point.

Re: Interesting Flathead Marine Engine

It has the Canadian third oil port introduced in WW2 that some people use for "95%" oil filter conversion.
I too would be concerned about water jacket corrosion.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Looking great so far, you should end up with an excellent engine.

That 1 1/16 carburetor has the truck type top on it with the double bevel clamp area for the air cleaner. You need to run a...

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend

Where are you located?
I know a couple people who might be interested in the axle, price depending on condition.

Re: My next flathead build?

When you get a chance can you post a couple pictures of the big generator and matching regulator? I have a small collection of big generators for the 8BA era stuff, but nothing from the 41-48 era.

Re: Crank

Dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder are over a century old, first appearing on a race engine in 1912 (https://hotrodenginetech.com/worlds-first-dohc-4-valve-per-cylinder-racing-engine/)....

Re: Borg Warner overdrive question

It depends on the Borg-Warner overdrive. The first units had a switch that interrupted power when the unit is locked out. You can see this roughly between the solenoid and lock out arm on the 49-50...

Re: Changing of the Guard. A new breed of car nuts.

Various segments of the old car hobby have been having this discussion for decades now. The explanation that fits best in my mind is: availability, affordability, and familiarity.

Re: Running ford king seeley gauges on 12 v

I used the attached pdf and made my own 12V to 6V regulator for the gauges in my 53 sedan. It has been working well for a decade of driving and 30k miles.

Re: NOS 8RT camshaft

Now we need to figure out what valve lash this cam is designed for.
The earliest 8BA cams used the same lobe design as the 38-48 cam.
The later (late 1949 and on) cams had a new design lobe with...

Re: What wheels are these?

Is that a Tonner truck? They had specific 17" wheels with an odd bolt pattern and hubcaps.

Re: Swapping Engines

I prefer to run the earlier center water outlet type engines in 39 and older trucks. The 8BA is a great engine, the best flathead V8 series in terms of use, but fitting one into the earlier vehicles...
