This info is for a 239 V8, sorry I didn't realize it was a 6 cyl.

Ford part # for the housing is AC 6392-D ('52 - '53)
There is one for a Merc listed on eBay w/pn AC...

I agree with Mart, it probably is part of the problem.

The crack doesn't look fresh to me. I think it's unlikely installing new motor mounts would cause the crack unless the engine was raised at...

Photo of the glove box decal on my '49 club coupe.

I put radials on it and run them at 32 psi.

The radials were a huge improvement!

Your original post sounds exactly like my '49 coupe when I got it.
All the tips given are very valid and had been done to my car by the PO.
I found it to be the TO bearing wasn't seated completely...
