Was the flywheel cut? If so the pressure plate mount surface needs to be cut also. The red book gives the correct measurement height between the two surfaces.

It's the end of the shaft/arbor that steps down in diameter that then inserts into a bushing. Simular to a motor shaft bearing setup. On a motor the shaft fits tight to the bearing.

This is pretty much like a watch hand. And they can be tough. I suggest 2 paint can lid removal tools used as pry bars, even pressure on opposite sides. Be sure to protect the dial with thick paper.

I read somewhere at one time of a builder using the proper type of teflon tape on the threads for the caps as well as using the o-ring for the locking ring.
