Re: engine slows when advance timing

Other possibility is the distributor upper plate. Some of the repro plates position the points in a location so that when the points just open (to cause the coil to produce the spark), the rotor is...

Re: engine slows when advance timing

Never assume the #1 piston is at TDC when the timing pin finds the dimple on the timing gear. Pull the #1 cylinder spark plug and use a flashlight to look in and verify.

Re: Saw at the Old Car Festival 2023

Agreed. I'm headed to Tennessee eventually for the same reason.

Re: Condenser Capacity

That trick about having a spare condenser attached to the wire loom clip on the firewall with an alligator clip is genius! I'm going to make some up right now.

Since the condenser is one of the...

Re: Condenser Capacity

That's a good article, Tom.

One line that might be troublesome for someone who does not yet know the Model A wiring inside the distributor is, "You can easily test a condenser while it is still...

Re: Condenser Capacity

Using FETs to trigger a field breakdown (that's what makes the spark) in a coil, some FETs have capacitance already, so the capacitance needed for the "LC circuit" is minimal. A small surface mount...

Re: Condenser Capacity

The weird part is, the actual value of the capacitor (condenser) isn't nearly as critical as it's leakage (acting like a resistor). The only time you would have to increase the capacitance is when...

Re: Marco Tahtaras

Marco was SO kind and generous with myself and others with his knowledge and parts stash. The first time I met him in person was at his house, Marco was showing me some details on his nearly perfect...

Re: Electric Model A's

Let us not forget that there were many electric cars on the road when the Model A was new. They were primarily marketed toward those in big cities and to ladies.

Re: RIP John Phillips Model A Garage

Very sorry you heard it from me. When I left you that VM, I wasn't even thinking. Should have waited and called when you could answer in person. I'm sorry about that.

Re: spark plugs

3X spark plugs are more difficult to foul than a more modern plug like the W18's. They were designed to be reliable even with 1920's grade fuels and lubricants, all of which were worse than anything...

Re: Best riding A?

Best (softest) ride Model A I own is the 29 fordor. The wood body cars also tend to be quieter. Ride comfort is a lot of factors combined. Springy springs (they stiffen as they age), proper shock...

Re: Torque Tube Grease Seal Direction for Install

The metal side of the grease seal seen in photo 1 faces the front of the car. The side you see in photo 2 faces the rear of the car.

The purpose of the torque tube grease seal is to prevent...

Re: Why is there a need for an Adjustable Drag Link?

The Delmue unit I tried is noticeably stiffer and stronger than a stock one. I kept it on the car after wrapping up the video because I like it so much.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this video on installing windings on a 1929 Model A roadster must be worth at least a million- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7GLsoWfKhg

Re: Spark lever position at idle and temperature sensitivity

With a STOCK head- When the engine is warming up at high idle, 5 (out of 10) notches from top. When running around town, 8 notches down. When on the highway, 10 notches down.

With higher...

Re: Why is there a need for an Adjustable Drag Link?

I really like the adjustable drag link because it is a lot beefier than the stock one.

Re: Cash Value/Sale History of Red Grow's "Betsy"?

See "ModelA29" answer. The car has been donated to MAFFI specifically to be used as a fundraiser for the museum. That is what the widow wants. Whoever wins the car becomes part of the car's story....

Re: Synchronized Transmission

Mitchell builds the sync transmission into original Model A transmission cases, so it looks original. No modifications required, just bolt-in. The shifter throw is a little shorter than the stock...
