Re: Lincoln 337 cui what trans can I use?????
Not much more I can say-I love the one in my F-100. It's not only fun to drive but it's a great attention getter and conversation piece. I love it when somebody looks at it when the hood is open and...

Re: joe abbin's blown flathead book
Pete: I think you still have time. I can't think of any thing more I'd like to read than your adventures and exploits over the years. If you write it, I'll be first in line to buy it. (But hurry...

Re: What flathead is this?
About 5 years ago I saw a real nice '50 or '51 "baby" at the James Dean run here in Fairmount, IN. It had the same set-up as mine (except the carbs-mine has Stromberg WWs). The car was from Ft. Wayne...

Re: My 'Barn find"
Looks "cast". If it is stamped, there will be an impression (female) from the punch on the back side.

Re: 337 flathead in my 1939 coupe?
Go for it! I have one in my '53 F-100 and love it. (And BTW, the crank does NOT weigh 300#). Most of the negativism expressed on this and other sites comes from people who have no personal...

Re: Protection under car
If you've seen any of the old photos/movies of the Ford assembly operations, you'd have seen where EVERYTHING that went into the chassis was painted. I believe the bottom of the body may have been...

Re: 337 flathead in my 1939 coupe?
The March 1953 Hot Rod Magazine carried the story of Ken Austin who installed one in his '39 convertible sedan. He had made the pattern and cast his own 3 X 2 intake. And, yes, he DID install a...

Re: Used anti freeze
Any automotive service facility ("repair garage") should have the capability. They are required by law to capture everything they drain. They in turn contract with a company like Safety Kleen to pick...

Re: Spec. Info, howard cams
I have an M-8 in my 291" 8BA ( 3 3/8 + .030). It's quite mild-Probably not much more than a stock EAC . Howards specs are: .328" gross lift; 230* duration @ .050"; Intake opens @ 5* BTC, closes 45*...

Re: Two Piece Valves
In a Flathead, separation of the valve head & stem isn't as likely to cause the damage shown here -in an O.H.V. engine. I had one do that and the head rattled around in its hole for a bit and beat...

Re: V8 fuel pump as an air pump? - Racecar
Same kind of sources: "old racers" have told me the same thing. It makes sense since the pump isn't working under the same handicap that Ford designed; namely having to pull/lift the fuel via...

Re: What can you tell me about this block
In addition to what has been said; there is NO difference between Ford and Mercury in '49-'53 blocks. The basic block was the same-the Merc had no unique identity until the crankshaft, pistons,...

Re: Block casting numbers
What more do you need to know if you already have it narrowed down to a '49-'53 block? They're all alike so it should be irrelevant what its exact lineage is.

If you're referring to an engine block, it's when one or more of the baked sand cores which are placed in the mold cavity to form the cylinders mislocates during the pouring of the hot iron. The...

Re: ID this Carb/Air Cleaner Mount
I have to say "truck"-just don't know which. The Lincolns and Mercuries had 90* adapters to offset the oil bath hangin over the cylinder head (to the Left on Lincoln and to the Right on the Mercury.

Re: 337 vs 239 engines
The Cadillac flatty was used in tanks in WW II but the Ford/Lincoln didn't exist until '48-a little late for that war.
