Re: Rebuilding generator

The bushing type armature is used with the bushing type rear support cover. The armature has a larger diameter and a longer dimension at the bushing end. It has the short taper at front.

The...

Re: Ecklers hydraulic brake conversion kit

There are equipment traders in here in the US that deal with manufacturing equipment. To scrap it would be a shame. I'd be surprised if no one would want it. Getting it moved is expensive but it...

Re: Ford Liquamatic auto trans in '41 Merc/Lincoln- has anyone seen one?

I think it was late in 1941 before the liquamatic was offered. The unit was bulky and overly complicated so it had bad teething problems. They were trying to keep up with stuff like the Hudson...

Re: Front fender cracking out

Rosebuds put out way too much heat for thin sheet metal. I use really small tips just to weld thin sheet metal. To normalize, it takes a knowledge of exactly what specific amount of heat it takes...

Re: White wall tires

The white wall is well inset into the tire carcass. The lack of carbon to keep the white is not as strong as the rubber with the much higher carbon content. With this and the tendency for the white...

Re: Spark lever position at idle and temperature sensitivity

Now and then, I retard at idle to show folks how low the rpm will go but I don't make a habit of it. They like a normal idle rpm for good oiling.

Re: New wood type of treatment or stain?

Stain is just to give wood a different shade. It will fill the porosity but it is limited on protection. Old school is spar varnish or boiled linseed oil. Polyurethane is in the modern category....

Re: Frame numbers

Ford was building some of the lower price vehicles at a high enough rate that most engines were mated to frames within a month but stuff could get backed up at times. Three months is within the...

Re: Wire wheel balancing

Wheels with welded spokes can be difficult to true. If the rim is bent then it may be better to replace it. Bending spokes may or may not true it back to serviceable specs.

Re: Front fender cracking out

All metals fatigue over time and use. Their are ways to relieve stresses tuch as normalization or shot peeing after weld repairs but sheet metal takes more care to do that and especially if it is...

Re: Borg Warner overdrives

The R10 assemblies were also spliced into the torque tubes for a time. These were available for model As and later Fords with torque tubes. They required the addition of components for control in the...

Re: Model A Roof Question

I can't answer your question but I do know that Ford liked to use screw sizes that are less common in the modern era. The size 10 screws like the 10-32 are still in wide use but size 12 screws not so...

Re: Rebuilding generator

Keep in mind that a 1928 model A would have has a powerhouse generator originally.

The later Autolite designs should still work to align the belt. The generators of the Model B era were a bit...

Re: Identify this front main crank seal

If it is a round rubber type seal (see Link) then the front timing cover would have to be removed to replace it. If the cover is removed and the retainer has not been modified, the rope seal or the...

Re: Carb

If it has a Stromberg model number on it, it may be easier to trace. So many automobile manufacturers existed in the early years of motorized transportation that it would be hard to nail it down. Add...

Re: Balance

To check front rotating assemblies, a person can carefully jack the car for best wheel vertical plane. If the wheel assembly has a heavy side, it will always rotate toward gravity until it stops....

Re: Straightening up a couple of Model A's (Advice needed)

I would look for a 1931 slant windshield model if I wanted a mostly steel Fordor body.

If you do away with the flexibility of the wood frame Fordor body, it will have to be built as you go for...

Re: 40 wt synthetic hydraulic fluid

I've used several different commercial hydraulic fluids over the years and have noted that most of them are lower viscosity types. ISO 150 or SAE 40 is about the most viscous type available. This...

Re: 40 wt synthetic hydraulic fluid

With modern fluid types it might be easier to find using international standards for viscosity. Try ISO 150 since it is approximately the same as SAE 40. Synthetics are more expensive than mineral...

Re: Straightening up a couple of Model A's (Advice needed)

Fabricating a metal subframe may be a challenge since the wood subframes were bolted to the frame with no need for body blocks like a Tudor or Coupe types. There were also steel braces that held body...
