1948 Lincoln Universal Joint

I've used Drake's & Carpenter's seal. I didn't like the fit. I found the seal from Steele Rubber far superior to the others. Just my opinion.

Sounds reasonable. The gear may be worn to the point where it doesn't turn with the shaft. With the wheels off the ground and the shaft spinning, the gear doesn't move.
