Re: Stuck Valve ?

The idea with the hex key is that the side of the head of the valve can be seen thru the spark plug hole. It is best to hit the top of the valve in its center to not bend the valve.
This can be done...

Re: Water in oil what next.

I wonder if you've thought of the freeze plugs in the pan rail,
They can leak into the oil pan.

Re: Exhaust guide seals

I think that one good reason to NOT use the seals on the exhaust is they may be made impossible to remove later. This would be from the heat.
One experienced builder on here recommends RTV, a thin...

Re: Merc 4 bolt intake to 99A block

I picked one from a 250 c.i. engine, closest to fathead displacement.
I looked for 1/4" pipe on the vacuum end, hose size of about 1/2" or 5/8"
leading to the intake manifold.

Re: 59A Head Gaskets-ios there a left and Right Side

The larger coolant holes in one end go toward the rear.

Re: Merc 4 bolt intake to 99A block

Best way in my opinion,
2GC- (GM)- carb has one end of the PCV system, other can be the road draft tube opening at the forward end of the manifold. I used an upside down freeze plug in the road...

Re: 46-48 front drum replacement, or??

If you don't have a swage cutter, or you want to reuse the part the swaging is on,
one can use a drill to remove the back of the stud. Then drive the stud out the outside.

Re: Engine in the car for decades.

If you can pull the pan, pull the intake manifold also.
I used a small pump, put a large pan on the floor and used a
brush to clean out the top and the bottom.
Use the oil pressure sender hole on...

Re: Ford Rear Brake Drum repair

NOTE: The swage cutter won't work if you want to reuse the drum.
Drill the offending stud from the back side. I start with a smaller size drill, say 5/16". Stay centered, increase drill size- the...

Re: lifter bore adj hole

I have been wondering if these hole could be drilled from the bottom side of the block.
This may involve figuring out where the lifter locates,
while on the back side of the cam lobe,
to make a...

Re: Banjo rear brake seal

There is such a thing as a seal that replaces the inside seal,
it's installed from the outside.
The ones I have are made by National seals. - Not for sale-
This would save one from axle...

Re: Stripped oil pan nut

I think that I would remove the oil pan, weld up the hole.
Drill and tap new threads. Be sure to get the location correct.
I just looked at a spare, to hard to put a nut inside.
And I hesitate to...

Crankshaft, 1937 LB engine, std size

This is a standard size crank, came from an air compressor.
It was the driven side- the compressor part.
The crank is standard size, comes with the rods.
It's been stored on end, long time. Should...

Re: 8BA engine

Some one may have done a compression test with a tester that was too long.
Valves get bent when the valve opens fully.

Re: Cracked Block (Ugh)

By all means, pressure test this, magnuflux it.
Like B&S said, don't fix it!
Use a straight edge to determine surface irregularity.
Use a good sealer, I like Three Bond 1184

Re: Possible causes of slow speed (5-15 mph) death wobble

I first drive the A-V8 with old tires- mud in one- out of balance, a lot.
New tires, stabilizer from a a (1975?) VW super Beatle.
Welded a tab on the left side of the wishbone, other end made a...

Re: Can I hone Flathead lifter bores?

Take a rag and wd40- or anything else- to it, I'll bet it goes away.

Re: 59A adjustable lifters having wear problem

The answer is "maybe".
You need to look at the cam closely.
It's a bit expensive to try, consider the worn lifters might have worn the cam.
Replacing the cam might be the best way to go.

Re: Another pan rail crack thread- Save it or junk it?

1) magnaflux all around the center main... Cracks around there will weaken the block.
2) don't introduce oil anywhere, hard to get rid of.
3) I tried arc welding on cast iron when I was young, did...

Re: 8BA tight main bearing clearance

I use brass shim stock and a micrometer to measure clearances.
Start by putting the crank in the block, lube, torque the mains, see if it move freely.
Check end play with feeler gauges.
Pull one...

Re: Oil Leaks and Flathead mechanic, Santa Ynez, CA

With the Ford closed drive shaft, there is no breather.
This means that there can be an air pressure build, thusly defeating seals.
I drilled a hole in the outer part of the drive shaft so as to...

Re: Oil change in 1940 ford coupe 221 V8 flathead, questions

I would change the oil often, to start out.
Dropping the pan is a pain... It would have to be REAL dirty, for me.
I've done it, but in a Model A frame, lots of room.
I pulled the intake manifold,...

Re: Steering Box for 1940

I think you can, the pinion shaft will come out thru the top, to get the old seal out.
Try not to disturb the steering shaft - four bolts on the end- the end play will be hard to re set if you...

Could be that these are intended for the 49-53 thermostat housings.
The ones at the front of the heads.
Just another note- Buy the thermostats that fail in an open position,
they're a couple...
