It's the 2 long bolts. Don't remove them from the starter as they hold it together. Also don't drop it on you. It's heavy.

I thought timing gear at first too, but distributor turns. Valves were stuck open.

The only problem I ever had with opening the windshield was when I was about 7 driving across Kansas with dad in his 29 Town Sedan when that wasp came in. Ouch.

We had the same problem with our 51 Merc. After several tows home and lots of time and money spent on carb, fuel pump, and ignition rebuilds we decided that we weren't staying strickly stock anyway...
