It wouldn't hurt anything to poke a feeler gauge in there. Not to adjust but rather to find out roughly what the gaps are.I'm sure you know this but they do not open and close at the same time and...

At the risk of asking a dumb question,have you tried to hook up a timing light and dwell meter?
