Re: My next flathead build?

That looks conclusively like "C59A". When I get some time I need to update the engine ID information.
Thanks for all the information and pictures.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Things are looking good. Good news on the Mercury heads working for you. That is exactly the same method I used with foil balls. Clearanceing the heads looks like what my friend did on his Mercury...

Re: 1950 Ford Panel truck project

Please note this isn't posted in the classified section, and is a hot rod instead of the flathead topics best suited for the Ford Barn. Recommend moving this advertisement to a different forum.

Re: Trip to the nationals in the 34

This has been a great thread to follow. If I had more vacation time and more money I would have loved to attended this meet.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I did one bank (four cylinders) at one time. Had a piece of scratch paper (maybe cardboard?) to make notes on, and measured each ball after spinning the crank a couple times with a dial caliper. The...

Re: My next flathead build?

I'm really curious what the mark looks like on the crusty engine after more cleaning. I suspect you are right, it is "C59A", but have learned not to speculate too much about an engine block before...

Re: My next flathead build?

I suspect that is "C99A" on the block. We have a nice thread here on the Ford Barn on identifying engines, it is more informative and more accurate than any youtube video I have seen.

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I used four balls of tin foil stuck to each piston (center, far left, far right, bottom, didn't worry about the top with the clearance in the factory head) with a dab of grease, bolted the heads down...

Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

Last week I helped swap the banjo section, ring & pinion, on a 40 pickup axle. The pins holding the coupler to the driveshaft and pinion had snapped due to worn out splines (the pins were taking the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I'm suspicious that someone shimmed the relief valve spring in the pump you got 75 psi from. You don't need more pressure than the factory 57 +/- setting.
If you have a truly flat surface (in the...

Re: My next flathead build?

The marking on your block is confusing. It has all the features of a 1939-1940 "99" block. Can you wire brush the "59" marking to clean it up and post another picture of it?

Also, it may be worth...

Re: Spring removal and Columbia installation

Did you get the keys out? One thought I have had in the past, but never had to resort to doing, was to carefully grind the top of the key down enough for the axle housing to slide off. I figured once...

Glenn, thank you for the picture and instructions.

Brian, apologies for taking your thread and wandering off on a different topic. Back to our regularly scheduled discussion.

Re: My next flathead build?

So far the pictures look encouraging. That looks like a great candidate for the bake and shot blast method of cleaning.
The worst disassembly I have done involved torching valves out to salvage...

Re: 2 overdrives

I'm curious about that seal kit, how do you get the splines to seal up so gear oil does not weep around the seal through the drive shaft coupling?

Re: 2 overdrives

Brian, it has been done before, and first done by Ford Motor Co. In 1941 you could order a Lincoln Zephyr with either a Borg-Warner overdrive (30% over), a Columbia (28% over), or both! The car that...

Re: Help needed to identify Bell Housing

The Borg-Warner T9 transmission was used in lots more applications than just Ford trucks. I have seen reference to them in many other old trucks, in various tractors, and in industrial engine...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I omitted the lock washers on Dad's 8BA. I checked thread depth by running each bolt into its mating hole and comparing to cap height, all tapped holes in that block were more than deep enough. I...

Re: My next flathead build?

Your block is interesting. All the normal casting features indicate it is a 39-40 "99" block type (239 cubic inch engine):

Round center water hole
Upside down trapezoid lower water hole
...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Re: My next flathead build?

That is a interesting combination of parts. In the USA the core plugs in the oil pan rail were phased out in late 1940 with the switch to the "raised deck" blocks for 41 model year. The combination...

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend

The 36 Zephyrs used 4.33 ratio with a Ford type banjo. That apparently wasn't a deep enough rear gear for the low torque V12 and heavier car, so 4.44 and 4.55 ratios were used. The hypoid type banjo...
