Re: My next flathead build?

From looking at the lettering in the casting . . . sure looks like a C59A moniker to me?

Given that this is a Canadian block, the "rules" that IronTrap noted do not apply. The block also has...

Re: Need recommendations straight ruler.

I'd get a 24" Starret . . . you should be able to find a good used on eBay. Make sure you get the thicken one (that isn't flexible). Another option is McMaster-Carr - and a precision ground and...

Re: Cam Gear Alignment?

The cam gear can only bolt on the cam in a single index/location - due to how the bolt holes are configured. It should have a marking on the outside edge to denote the indexing to the crankshaft...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Any sort of cheap modeling clay works fine --> just make a couple 1/4" round "snakes" and place two of them on a piston crown (or in the chamber) -- one horizontally and one vertically. Putting a...

Re: 1932 Ford shock absorbers taking them apart

What type of tooling/fixture do you use to take the cover off - without making a mess out of it? Seems like some sort of super-duty band clamp is needed?

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

You'll not have too much compression - just make sure you have enough piston to head clearance (squish).

You want about .040 to .045 with the gasket in place (above the piston). As long as you...

Re: High RPM problem, thoughts?

Curious as to what you called "re pops" . . . are they the ones from Speedway, or are they the ones that Clive makes from England? (These are the ones you'd want).

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Heck, that might work! The pump on my grinder works . . . otherwise, I'd be tempted to try it as well.

Re: My next flathead build?

Yeah, the deck surface of that block is a bit strange . . . like a Merc 'Keystone" block from 39 - 42. Hopefully you end up with a good block - you're certainly putting the work into it!

Re: Oil leak

I'm with Kube - it surely won't hurt the situation. Another potential is for there to be an issue on the rear cover that bolts to the block behind the flywheel -- it has a thin gasket and...

Re: 59-AB engine components

You've been given a good list of solid vendors. My suggestion is to figure out the complete package that you'll be needing and then shop the entire package with 3rd Gen, VanPelt and Reds. Then...

Re: Oil leak

That sounds like a good "next steps" plan to me. If that doesn't work out, then you'll have to pull the engine and get into it deeper.

Re: Oil leak

Yeah - in my mind you'll need to pull the pan and maybe see if that cork seal is an issue - that would be by far the easiest fix. If it is related to the crank and main bearings . . . things get a...

Re: 1947 Rear Axle Worn Down

If it was mine, I'd pull the whole rear and go through it. It is not easy to work on 1/2 of it while on the garage floor! Just trying to make your life easier in the end!

Re: My next flathead build?

I sure hope you get at least a great block out of it! That thing needs about the more thorough cleaning one can imagine! I've never seen so much carbon and sludge buildup. Amazing that any oil...

Re: Oil leak

Your issue may be the Speedway pump . . . which is most likely a clone of the 49-53 pump. Due to its helical teeth, it puts out more volume than the original pump and maybe the volume is overcoming...

Re: VE Day May 8th 1945

I was born on May 8th, 1959 and my Pops served on a submarine in WW2 . . . the "Moray Eel". I think about him, all those who passed before him, those who passed afterwards and about all the veterans...

Re: Timing gear sheared 12 teeth

I'm sure somebody has "done it" . . . and I am also sure that I could do it faster and a whole heck of a lot better by pulling the engine. Also, I could sleep at night knowing that I did the job as...

Re: Timing gear sheared 12 teeth

My take: You'll spend more time and go through a lot of aggravation attempting to fix it in the car. By the time you go through all of that, you could have the engine out of the car, taken apart...

Re: My next flathead build?

That thing is one messy ole' girl now isn't she! It probably just ran and just chugged along at lower RPMs . . . building up all that carbon and sludge over the years . . .

Re: Timing gear sheared 12 teeth

You'll need to pull the oil-pan at the very least - to hopefully getting as much of the crap out of the engine as possible. I think it can be done in the car - though getting the gear pressed on in...

Re: Oil leak

I believe in order to change to the newer type seal, the crankshaft has to be replaced any/or modified? I'm thinking that the 'slinger' cannot be used with a rope type seal? I believe it can be...

Re: 1947 Rear Axle Worn Down

You'll definitely need at least one new axle and a new hub to go with it. The whole rear end should be taken apart and rebuilt. You might be able to find some NOS axles - lookup BarnFind here on...

Re: My next flathead build?

If you don't need the head, then you might use a hole-saw and just saw down around the stud. It is a brutal way, but sometimes yah gots to do what yah gots to do! ;)

BTW, I've seen oil like that...
