My old Piper J3 had one. used to help make coordinated level turns using stick,rudder and elevator to keep the ball centered.

The last time I needed an air pressure check and adjustment, the AAA guy came out and did it 30 min. or so.
No searching for the best tire pressure gauge.

Just happens to be done to a SBC

Saw the same treatment over 20 years ago, only difference it was done using a 289 FORD OHV.

Just one possibility, check the cork fuel bowl gasket for cracks or leaks.

You have to give some consideration that a 50's rear quarter panel plus any necessary components were used to repair damage at some point in time.

Check the cork glass bowl gasket, if it is cracked and leaks air, it will cause fuel starvation to the carb.

1948 was (as I understand it ) the first year that Ford installed the 8BA series flathead with thermostat housings to the front of the heads into pickups.

1949 was when they installed the 8BA...

Offy used their 49-53 adapter castings for use on the early 32-48 application.
The oil fill and road draft holes were just not installed in the early intakes....

Never changed my 6 volt 2 speed heater motor in my '51 Merc.
Has been running on 12 volts as needed for well over 20 years.
Only difference is it runs faster just like the starter motor.

Recall that back in the mid 50's we used to take clocks to the local watch repair shop and he used to add a coating of platinum to eliminate most flash pitting to the points. Recall that the points...

Virtually all brand manufacturers used welded/spot welded seams to connect body panels together. These were then filled, using lead filler to hide them.

From an old guy.

Whoever did the fix ,did it wrong.
Folgers was normally not used for the fix but store brand cans were
because they were cheaper.

Have used Muggy weld Super alloy 1 to repair pot metal cracks and pitting with excellent results.
You will have to use the correct product to repair what ever you are working on.

So long as there is appox. 1/16" of the washer engaging the slot, just fabricate a sleeve that will slip over the stud and slips in the slot.
This will keep the stud centered in the slot....
