Re: 1948 Ford F1 Metal Bed Question

My metal-over-wood bed was pretty much non-existent when I did my bed so I cant help with rivets, but I believe there are a few places that make a kit to replace with wood. I'm fairly certain...

Re: Muffler review

Smithy's are junk. Nothing like the originals. Mine rotted out to I put a pair of Thrush Cherry Bombs on it. A little louder, but sound ok. Not raspy like I remember them being on overheads.

Re: 4 speed to 3 speed swap in a 1948 F1

Technically, yes.

4 spd and 3 spd heavy duty are interchangeable. 3 spd light duty is essentially a 39 ford toploader converted to open drive. There is a different driveshaft yoke needed to make...

Re: 49 f1 PU T5

If you go with a T5, you can probably keep your stock rear. 9 inch rear from 57-72 F100 are the easiest to swap in as they are the same width and spring perches are in the right spot. 78 ford rear is...

Re: 49 f1 PU T5

Unlike the guy above me, I’ll try to be more helpful. Yes it’s possible to go 70 in overdrive. What rear gear ratio do you have/want. You will need to cut the crossmember as the T5 is longer. Many...

Re: 8BA head studs leaking

I do 2 or 3 at a time until I've got all 24 on a side done. Make sure you drain the coolant out and that the threads are dry or else it wont seal properly. Use a liberal amount of Permatex #2 and...

Re: F-1 steering wheel

Drill and tap it!!!!

I replaced my stock wheel with a '49 passenger wheel a few months ago. I had no holes and it was an absolute nightmare. I should have tapped it right off the bat.

Not...

Re: fresh air hose to heater on F1

I got one for mine a few years back...can't remember where unfortunately, but I seem to remember it being 55-57 T-bird. Not OEM, but "close enough". May want to search on that.

Re: 50 flatty idles well revs okay, but will not drive down the road.

I'd like to throw a monkey wrench in. While it does sound like fuel delivery, I've seen similar symptoms with mismatched coil/resistors (i.e. having an external resistor, and an internally resisted...

Re: Overheating 8ba

What kind of heads are you running? Did you re-torque after a few heat cycles? I put aluminum heads on my 8BA and it got hot a few times during break in because exhaust heat was making it's way into...

Re: 48 F-1 running board configuration

I had those boards on my 48, but unfortunately non-salvageable. My guess is that the change was made in late 50 or '51 to accommodate for the US Gov's steel needs during the Korean Conflict. Total...

Re: Lacquer over Epoxy Primer????

I like PPG products. You have to decide what your top coat will be comprised of. Single-stage urethane is a nice, modern alternative, although the isocynates within are harmful if you don't have the...

Re: 52 F1 leaf spring

I just did this over the weekend on my '48.

LMC is just re-selling Posie's Dual Flex Springs. You can get them cheaper through SPeedway motors.

I bought the shackle kit from Dennis Carpenter to...

Re: 11" clutch with a 3 speed?

I run an 11" in my F-1. I don't see why people think it's so stiff.

Re: 49-53 Water Outlet/Thermostat Gasket

Another vote for stickies. Nothing more infuriating than having your t-stat drop down at the last second because you're trying to finagle everything together holding the gasket on with the bolt...

Re: 1950 8BA Rebuild Questions

I'll try to help. I built a 258" Flathead 8BA for my '48 F1

1.) I had hardened put in. Necessary? Not sure, but it didn't cost much for peace of mind

2.) I used Egge 4 ring pistons. Do you have...
