If you like the idea of slider buttons, I drilled my spring leaves and installed slider buttons from Chassis Eng. Run the drill < 500 rpm and use cutting oil. Rigid works as well as any for this.

I agree and you can measure between the perch bolt centers to be sure. 37 to 40 is about 38 in. and 35 and 36 should be about 2 in. less.

I don't know why, but I've seen those "angle braces" that you refer to both ways. I used Paul Bradleys pans to repair my trunk area, but Carpenters are more complete if you need to do the whole trunk...
