Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Flat washers it is then. If the 2 thin headed bolts are shorter, I will skip the washers on them. I'm considering a set of 'store bought' ball bearing water pumps. It appears I will need 'big bore'...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

In 50+ years of fixing mechanical things I have seen more broken lockwashers than I can recall. That's why I brought this up, For the record I just went down to look again at what is on my project...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

There is a lot of negative comments in forums about split lockwashers on main bearing caps and other highly torqued critical fastenings. It does seem apparent that for the majority of 8ba engines...

Thanks Pete, and only 8 doors left until the 'weekend' starts.

Re: Timing gear sheared 12 teeth

Looks like you're in a tough spot here. Specially with the summer driving season beckoning. I like your idea of 'pinning up the valves', easy enough, but getting the lifters outa the way, what about...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Got 9 more doors assembled and day ain't over yet. AND that includes the 25 mile round trip to town when I realized it was the 8th of the month. Gotta pay lumberyard bill by the 8th to get the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Tim, there are very knowledgeble flathead builders in both camps here. Aftermarket or stock distributor with stock carb/cam and large displacement. Since I'm cheap and it's a really easy thing to...

Re: oil pump gear

Funny, I'm not the guy to answer that because I was gonna ask the same thing about my new engine with it's T-5. All at once or seperate? Of course the pick point for the chain will depend on that...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I think I was pretty much just having fun thinking about the manual advance. I'm a serial tinkerer and sometimes I don't know when to quit. My plan is to go with the cast iron distributor, get a new...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thank you Mark. I'll make up a list tonight! And an advance/retard lever off the distributor body linked to a quadrent on the coulmn? Can't be any harder to make up than the string operated, spring...

Re: 1936 Exhaust manifold sealer

I would suggest you look into Remflex compressible manifold gaskets. I have bought multiple sets for flathead V8. They are good for a couple thousand degrees and squish to fill gaps in such things as...

Re: oil pump gear

Here's a gear I rejected on my current build. With a tape measure I find the gear is about 7/16" across the teeth and so is the offset. But my block with ny good gear installed is 3' away, so it's...

Re: oil pump gear

Or just an 1/8" strip on the edge of each gear is engaged, and you're on borrowed time. Easy to make a new gasket if required. And I guess of course you need to get behind the flywheel and that's a...

Re: oil pump gear

Yes, check it since there is some doubt. It's very easy to check now and I would imagine it's impossible once in the vehicle. With the offset on that gear it is likely on correctly or it would have...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Thanks for the offer and the words of encouragement. Hopefully today I can get some time today to check out the ring end gap so I can move in that direction. At this stage I am concerning myself with...

Re: Interesting Flathead Marine Engine

And those aren't headers, they are water cooled mainfolds, jacketed so after the cooling water is pumped through the block it cools the exhaust on it's way to the transom. I bet a V8 piped like that...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Tim, Happy to say I have all 3 of trhose parts and Skip, I forget about all the info on VanPelt site. Imagine my surprise when I got off the barn this morning and walked into my woodshop. So much for...

Re: Inaugural 2024 Bakersfield Prewar Swap Meet Was A Success !

I'd love to attend that someday. Hard to imagine a swap meet where you don't have to wade through acres of muscle car stuff to find a needed flathead part. Been a cold spring up here in the PNW,...

Gosh, a lot to digest here this morning!
Scotty, start collecting parts fvor that rebuild and yes, I started collecting old stuff when I was 19. I have some interesting air cooled engines and the...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I'll do that Terry, and I made a very careful inspection of the inside of the pistons to look for aluminum chips etc and they are all surgically clean. It's easy to see in there. I did my cam end...

Re: Interesting Flathead Marine Engine

Now that is REALLY cool to me. Paragon gear is/was in Taunton Massachusetts, near where my dad grew up. I'd love to have first dibs if you only want the engine part.

Re: My next flathead build?

I had an industrial flathead on a trailer mounted welder in the early 90s. It was always overheating. During one of those times when "I'm gonna get out of this flathead thing" occured, I gave the...
